Family group sea kayaking in Plockton

The picturesque village of Plockton sits on a sheltered bay with stunning views overlooking Loch Carron. It faces east, so the settlement and bay are generally protected from the prevailing winds. Home to a thriving Highland community and popular with visitors, Plockton is well served by hotels, B&Bs, a small general store, pubs, restaurant and galleries. Transport links are excellent. It takes just under 2 hours to reach Plockton by car from Inverness or Fort William, or you can relax on the train along one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Scotland which, from Inverness, takes you directly into the village.

Beyond Plockton there are numerous destinations to choose from. Within an hours radius you can reach the Isle of Skye and gateway to the Outer Hebrides, the dramatic Torridon mountains, Applecross and one of the highest roads in the UK, the Kintail mountains, Glenelg and its Sandaig Islands, and the south Skye Ferry across to Mallaig and Knoydart.

For accommodation and travel information for Plockton please see www.plockton.com. If you prefer to camp or have a caravan we recommend Ashaig Camp Site a few miles away on the Isle of Skye, or Reraig caravan site also close by near Balmacara.

Directions

Plockton Bay

From Kyle of Lochalsh, take the road signed for Plockton. After approximately 3 miles and after the village of Erbusaig you will see the sign for Drumbuie and the village on the left had side of the road. Turn sharp left into Drumbuie and then follow the tarmac road right through the village, keep bearing right. Once you spot the trailer of kayaks you are there! From Plockton or Duirinish, take the road signed for Kyle of Lochalsh. At Drumbuie, turn right into the village and follow the directions above.

If you are planning on travelling from Inverness, please be aware of the A 890 road closure along Lochcarron. Free car and passenger ferries are currently in place at Strome. Information and advice on the Stromeferry bypass closure can be found at www.highland.gov.uk . You may wish to consider an alternative route which is roughly the same distance. For this you will take the A 82 along Loch Ness via Drumnadrochit. At Invermoriston take the A 887 which will be signed for Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye. Enjoy the fanastic journey through spectacular Glen Shiel and be sure to stop off at Eilean Donan Castle along the shores of Loch Duich.
